Magistrates Court (Regional Court) (Mutoko) Notice, 2024

Mutoko is appointed as a place for holding a regional magistrates court, so serious cases from the area no longer have to travel to another regional court centre.

The Minister of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs has appointed Mutoko as a place for holding a regional court in Mashonaland East Province.

Regional magistrates courts sit above ordinary magistrates courts and handle the more serious criminal matters — including rape and other offences carrying heavier sentences — as well as regional civil jurisdiction where conferred.

The practical effect for people in Mutoko and the surrounding districts is that these matters can be heard locally rather than requiring accused persons, complainants and witnesses to travel to another regional court centre.

The notice is a single operative sentence. It does not set a commencement date, name magistrates, or define the districts the Mutoko regional court will serve.
