Declaration of National Monument KwaVaMuzenda and Zimuto Street Heritage Monument

KwaVaMuzenda and the Zimuto Street heritage landmarks in Mucheke, Masvingo — including the rondavel where the late Vice President Simon Muzenda lived — are declared a national monument.

The Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage has declared KwaVaMuzenda and the Zimuto Street Heritage Landmarks to be a national monument.

The declaration covers five vernacular grass-thatched rondavels — numbered R36, R47, R73, R81 and R82 — of which R36 is identified as the house where the late Vice President Cde Simon V. Muzenda used to stay. It also takes in other structures along Zimuto Street: the Dr Simon V. Mazorodze Clinic, Jotina Flats and the Single Quarters, multi-cultural and religious heritage landmarks, Mucheke High School and the Misana yeNzou Houses.

Declaration brings these buildings under the protection of the National Museums and Monuments Act, which restricts alteration, demolition and development at a declared site without permission. That is a live consideration for anyone owning, occupying or maintaining the listed buildings, including a working clinic and a working school.

The notice sets no fees, no penalties and no commencement date, and it does not give map coordinates or a surveyed boundary — the listed structures are identified by name and street rather than by cadastral description.
