Declaration of National Monument Matabeleland South (Gwanda) Provincial Heroes Acre Monument
Matabeleland South (Gwanda) Provincial Heroes Acre, on Stand 1029 in Gwanda District, is now a National Monument protected under the National Museums and Monuments Act.
The Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage has declared the Matabeleland South (Gwanda) Provincial Heroes Acre a National Monument in terms of section 20 of the National Museums and Monuments Act [Chapter 25:11].
The site is on Stand 1029 in Gwanda District. Its boundary is an irregular six-sided polygon: from point A (709170E, 7685336N) south-easterly 690m to B, north-westerly 399m to C, southerly 381m to D, north-westerly 25m to E, then along the edge of Plot 1028 south-westerly 183m to F, and southerly 70m back to A.
The effect is protective rather than financial. Once declared, the site falls under the Act's controls on alteration, excavation, removal of material and development, administered by National Museums and Monuments of Zimbabwe. The notice sets no fees, creates no offence of its own and states no commencement date. It was gazetted on 26 July 2024.
